Directions for Creating a Treasure Hunt

Filamentality - Creating A Treasure Hunt

By Sandy Turner, SCILnet/Fort Lewis College

Directions for getting started on a Treasure Hunt activity:

Step 1 - Select a topic.
  • It is best to have a topic in mind before going into Filamentality, however, there is guidance on selecting a topic if you need some ideas.
Step 2 - "Filamentality" page
  • Go to http://www.kn.pacbell.com/wired/fil/
Step 3
  • Click on "New" (at top) or "Start a New Topic" (at bottom)
Step 4 - "Start a New Topic" page
  • Fill in blanks.
  • Write down your name (how you spelled it) and password and put somewhere safe.
  • Select "Spin this Thing"
Step 5
  • You should see a screen that says "Basic info for 'Your Name'" - double-check the information.
  • Select "Add Links" at the bottom of the page.
Step 6 - "Add Links" page.
  • Read through the information on this page. You may want to venture to the "Mentality Tips" if you need some guidance. Use the "Back" button or "Go" menu to return to this page.
  • Make sure to read the searching "Mentality Tip" about "flying off" browser windows (http://www.kn.pacbell.com/wired/fil/fr_two_windows.html). There is some very useful information about using two browser windows at the same time.
  • Use a search engine (or several search engines) to find links for your topic.
  • Add the links by filling in the blanks near the middle of the page. Make sure you get the title and description of your links (this is where the copy and paste functions come in handy).
Step 7
  • If you have more links to add, select "Add Links".
  • You should see your links under a heading that says "Your Name's Links". Scroll down to add more links.
  • You can go back and edit your links by selecting "Edit Links".
Step 8
  • Once you have added all your links, you can select the type of on-line activity you want to create (Hotlist, Scrapbook, Hunt, Sampler, WebQuest). For the purposes of this tutorial, we will select the Treasure Hunt (listed as "Hunt" at the bottom of the page).
Step 9 - "Let's Spin a Hunt" page
  • Add your activity questions in the appropriate spaces. The questions can be specific for each link you have, or they can be general with the intention of using any of the links to find the answer.
Step 10 - Customizing Your Treasure Hunt
  • "Shall we scramble?" Consider scrambling the order of your links.
  • Add a title for your activity (or use the one they give you).
  • Add an introduction for your activity (or use the one they give you).
  • Add a cumulative or extra credit question (The "Big Question").
Step 11 - Save & Post Your Treasure Hunt on the Web
  • If you are finished adding links and questions, select "Hunt" to post your activity on the Web. Read and follow the directions!!!

Note that these very same links that you have entered can be used for any of the templates (Hotlist, WebQuest, etc.).
