Lesson 6   Adding Bookmarks in Netscape 4.0X

(Note: On the Mac OS, the Bookmark Window is available only from the Communicator menu (found at the top in the menu bar). You can display the Bookmark Properties dialog by opening the Bookmark window's Edit menu and choosing Get Info.)

Practice Exercise 1:  While Viewing a Web Page

For this exercise, go to the CNN web site:   http://www.cnn.com.

  1. Select Bookmarks -> Add Bookmark. This will automatically add the bookmark to your bookmark file. Bookmarks can be found on the Location Line:

    or in the Communicator Menu:

  2. Go to the Bookmark list (menu) again and you should see the bookmark that you just added.

Practice Exercise 2:  Manually Entering a URL

Suppose someone has given you a URL, or you have seen one in a magazine or on TV, and you would like to add this to your bookmark file. Follow the steps below to manually enter a bookmark for Fodors Travel Online:   http://www.fodors.com.

  1. Select Bookmarks -> Edit Bookmarks (from either the Location line or the Communicator menu); this will take you to the Bookmark Editing Window (or you can use Ctrl + B).

  2. The Bookmark Editing Window should look like similar to this (note that this picture contains several folders of bookmarks; your window may contain more or less):

  3. Select File -> New Bookmark. Note: If you have folders created in your Bookmark Editing Window and want to place the bookmark in a particular folder, you will need to highlight the folder in which you would like to place the bookmark (click on the folder), and then select File -> New Bookmark.

  4. You should see the Bookmark dialog box. Manually enter the information in the necessary fields:
    • Name - type in the name of the web page as you want it to appear
    • Location - type in the URL for the web site. Make sure to enter the exact address or it will not work.
    • Description - optional

  5. Click OK and close the Bookmark Window. The bookmark has been added to your file.

Practice Exercise 3:  Using a Shortcut Menu

While viewing a web page, you can add a bookmark for a link on that page (site unseen!) by using a short-cut menu.

  1. Go to the following web page:  http://www.education-world.com
  2. Place your cursor over one of the hyperlinks on the page. (Remember, it should turn into a hand.)
    • In Windows, right-click on the link and you should get a pop-up menu.
    • On a Mac, hold the mouse button down on the link for a few seconds and you should get a pop-up menu.

  3. Select Add Bookmark; this will automatically place the bookmark for this link in your bookmark file.

Practice Exercise 4:  Using Your Bookmarks

Practice returning to the pages you have bookmarked in this lesson by going to the Bookmark menu and selecting the above three web sites (CNN, Fodor's, and Education World).

  1. Select Bookmarks from the Location line.
  2. Select the bookmark that you want to visit.

Bookmark Harmony

For those of you using both MS Internet Explorer and Netscape:
Would you like your Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer bookmarks to coexist peacefully? Take a look at a shareware program called NavEx. NavEx converts Favorites to Bookmarks and Bookmarks to Favorites. Isn't that comforting? (taken from TipWorld, Oct. 19, 1998)
