Lesson 3   Locating a Web Site

In this lesson you will practice going from one web site to another by typing web site addresses (URL's) in the Location Bar . Remember, you must type the address exactly as it is shown or you will get an error message saying that your browser is unable to locate that site.

Practice Exercises:

Method 1:

  1. Using the mouse, move the pointer over the Location Bar (it can also be labeled Netsite, or Go To or Address field) and position the cursor (I bar) at the end of the URL address.
  2. Click once in the Location Bar to select the address. The entire line should now be highlighted (change color).

    Internet Explorer
  3. Delete this address by hitting the delete key (or you can just type the new address over it).
  4. Enter the address:   http://www.pbs.org

    Internet Explorer

  5. Then press Enter. This will take you to the PBS Online site. After some time, you will see the PBS home page come up. As the page loads, the Status Bar at the bottom of the screen will give you a visual indication of how much of the document has loaded.
Internet Explorer

Note that in the more recent versions of the browsers (NS Communicator 4.X, and IE 4.X), if you have visited the site before, the browser will attempt to automatically "complete" the URL as you type it in. This is called Statement Completion. The browser checks for previously visited URLs that match the letters you have typed and, if a match is found, fills in the remainder of the letters.

Method 2:

  1. Click on the File menu at the top of the screen.
  2. Select Open Page (or Open Location in NS 3.0 version). You should see the Open Page Dialog Box.
  3. Enter the web address (URL) in the space provided (try http://www.studyweb.com/).
  4. Select the Open button and this should take you to the site.
Internet Explorer

Method 3:

An easy way to avoid having to type an address is to Copy and Paste the address into the Location Bar. Copy this address (http://www.m-w.com/netdict.htm) into the Location Bar by doing the following:

  1. Highlight the address by clicking and dragging across it.
  2. Go to Edit -> Copy (or use Ctrl + Cfor a PC and Command + C for a Mac); this puts the address on your computer's "clipboard".
  3. Click once on the location bar (this should highlight the current address).
  4. Go to Edit -> Paste (or use Ctrl + V for a PC and Command + V for a Mac); this should paste the address right over the top of the other one.
  5. Hit Enter.
