What is an Autoresponder?        Autoresponders are programs set up to send automated messages through e-mail. When an autoresponder receives an e-mail, an automated reply is sent to the original sender. Many companies offer autoresponder services for a fee, however, you may be connected to a server that offers free autoresponder service (ie: perhaps your school).        The SCILnet schools will have access to a "vacation" autoresponder function with WebMail as soon as your school obtains and sets up their own e-mail server (however, the use of this function will be determined by your technology coordinator). You will be able to leave an autoresponding message indicating that you are on vacation. This message will be received by anyone who sends you e-mail while you are away.        Autoresponders are a great way to practice sending and receiving e-mail, however, most have a more important function. Most autoresponders are designed to provide their audience with useful information. Autoresponders found as links on a web page require that your browser be configured to send e-mail. See your site trainer for assistance if needed. Exercise 1: An Auto Response from Washington! Write the President This link will take you to the White house web site. Under "You can send electronic mail to:" you will see the President, Vice President, First Lady, and Mrs. Gore. Select one of these white house occupants and follow the instructions on sending an e-mail. Here you are actually filling out an HTML form that will be sent to an e-mail autoresponder. Or, you can use your e-mail client and address an e-mail to one of the following autoresponders: President@whitehouse.gov Vice.President@whitehouse.gov First.Lady@whitehouse.gov mrs.gore@whitehouse.gov You should receive a response very soon. Check your e-mail occasionally to see if you have received the response.
