Windows 95 (Module 2) Performance Assessment (Trainer copy)

Note: Student will need an IBM (PC compatible) formatted floppy disk for this assessment.

Exercise 1

You will need to be at the Windows Desktop with all programs closed.
Move the taskbar from its current position to a new position on the desktop (ie: to the right or left side of the screen). Return it to its original position.

(Left-click on a blank area of the taskbar and drag it to the new position)

Exercise 2

Where would you go to check the Date/Time settings? Go there to make sure they are correct. Change if they are not correct.
(Go to Date/Time in Control Panel; highlight what you want to change and either type the changes or use the arrows)

Exercise 3

Change any 2 of the following Desktop settings:
Background pattern
Background wallpaper
Display Color Scheme
Screen Saver
(Should know how to get to the Control Panel -> Display -> Background, Appearance or Screen Saver)

Exercise 4

The double-click speed for the mouse is too fast for you and needs adjusting. Where would you go to do this? Demonstrate this for your trainer.
(Should know how to get to Control Panel -> Mouse -> Basics -> Double Click Speed)

Exercise 5

Place an application (program) that you use frequently in the Start Menu. (Or, you can place a folder or a file there). Launch the program (or folder or file).
(Go to Start -> Settings -> Taskbar -> Start Menu Programs -> Add; Browse if necessary -> put in Start Menu)

Exercise 6

You would like to see all the folders that are on your hard drive (C:) and then see the contents of these folders. Where can you go to do this and how would you get there?
(Should know how to open My Computer or Windows Explorer and select C: drive)

You would also like to see when each folder and file were created, what size they are, and what type of a file they are. What can you do to view this? (Perform this function.)
(Should know how to select Details from the View menu)

Exercise 7

Create a folder on the hard drive and give it your first name.
(Should know how use My Computer or Windows Explorer to create a new folder)

Rename it with your last name. (Make sure to hit "Enter" after renaming.)
(Should know how to use the File menu or right click shortcut to rename folder or just click on it twice, slowly, until a box shows around the highlighted name)

Create a second folder on the hard drive and name it "Training".

Exercise 8

Open the WP document (file) provided by your trainer (check with your trainer, it may be on a disk or on the hard drive).
(It can be opened from within the WP program that created it or from on of the file management windows [Windows Explorer or My Computer] in which case it would launch the WP program automatically)

Save this file to the folder you just created with your last name on it. Name the file "file1".
(Should know how to use the "Save As..." function from the File menu and how to change the "Save As..." window so that it will save in this particular folder)

Leave this open on your desktop.

Exercise 9

Suppose you cannot remember where the Windows Paint application is located. Use the Windows Find function to find the Paint program on your computer. (Because it is an application, it will show up as an .exe [executable] file)
(Should know how to access Find [files and folders] from Start menu have it search C: drive)

Open the Paint program from this Find screen.
(Double-click on the icon next to Mspaint.exe)

Create a new picture and save or open the file supplied by your trainer (will either be on a disk or the hard drive)
(Scribble with the pencil tool and save file, or know how to use the Open dialog box)

Save this file to the folder you created called "Training"; name the file "file2".
(Should know how to use the "Save As..." function from the File menu and how to change the "Save As..." window so that it will save in this particular folder)

Leave this open on your desktop.

Exercise 10

Print both file1 and file2.
(Should know how to use the print command from the File menu or Tool bar)

Pause (and then Restart), or Cancel ONE of the print jobs in the Print Queue.
(Go to Start -> Settings -> Printers -> select printer -> Printer (or Document) Menu -> Pause Printing; or Document Menu -> Cancel Printing)
Note: If you are printing to a network printer, this may not work. It depends on the type of network and configuration. Give it a try!

Exercise 11

Move the Paint file (file2) to the folder with your last name.
(Should know how to use Windows Explorer or My Computer to move files; can click and drag, or use the Edit or right-click shortcut Menu - Cut and Paste)

Copy the folder with your last name to your floppy disk.
(Should know how to 1) click and drag it to the A: drive or 2) use Send To > function from File menu, or 3) use Copy and Paste from Edit menu)

Create a shortcut for this folder (or a file in the folder) and place it on the desktop.
(Should know how to use Create Shortcut from File menu or right-click shortcut menu.

Delete the folder called "Training".
(Should know how to 1) use the delete function from the a) File menu or a) right-click shortcut menu, or 2) drag it to the recycle bin, or 3) highlight and use delete key)

Exercise 12

Delete file1 from the folder with your last name (the one on the C: drive).
(Should know how to 1) use the delete function from the a) File menu or a) right-click shortcut menu, or 2) drag it to the recycle bin, or 3) highlight and use delete key)

Recover (restore) this file; put it back in the folder.
(Should know how to get it out of Recycle Bin and put it back in the folder)

Delete the folder with your last name from the hard drive.
(Should know how to 1) use the delete function from the a) File menu or a) right-click shortcut menu, or 2) drag it to the recycle bin, or 3) highlight and use delete key)

Close all programs and shut down the computer.
(Should know how to use 1) the close button in upper right [x], or 2) Exit from the File menu, or 3) Close from the Windows Control menu, or 4) the Alt + F4 keyboard strokes)
