Lesson 3  Composing and Sending E-Mail

Exercise 3-C: Sending Copies

Sending copies:
Suppose you have written an e-mail to the chairman of the Curriculum Writing Committee and you want to send the same e-mail to your principal. You can do so by typing the committee chairman's e-mail address in the "To:" box and your principal's e-mail address in the "Cc:" box. Both of these addresses will show up in the header of your e-mail when it is received.

The "Bcc:" is a "blind" carbon copy box. This is where you "hide" addresses. Your receivers will not see that the mail was sent to this address. Sound sneaky? Could be, however, this can be a useful function when sending group mail. Let's say you are sending an assignment to your students; all 120! Rather than having all of their addresses show up in the header, you can put them all in the "Bcc:" box and then the header of your e-mail will not show the 120 addresses to which you are sending. It can be annoying to receive one like this as all of those addresses take up a great deal of space in your e-mail.

You can put as many e-mail addresses in the "To:", "Cc:" and "Bcc:" boxes as you want. Just place a comma in between each address.

Assignment WebMail 3-C - Sending Copies:
Obtain another e-mail address (a member of your class, a friend, or family member) and compose another short e-mail (make sure to misspell a few words!). Address this e-mail to your trainer, carbon copy it to the new e-mail address, and blind carbon copy it to your e-mail address. Check the spelling and send (make sure to include the assignment name and number). Let your trainer know if you have any questions.
