Solving the Copy Profile Problem

There is a bug that does not allow you to copy a user profile that was created after the installation of IE 4.0 because of a problem with the Protect Memory Service To work around the problem follow these directions

  1. Logon as an Administrator

  2. Start the registry editor (regedt32.exe)

  3. Select the "HKEY_USERS on Local Machine" window

  4. From the registry menu select "Load hive"

  5. Move to the persons profile area in the %systemroot%\Profiles\<username>, e.g. C:\winnt\Profiles\jbesky

  6. Select the NTUSER.DAT file and click OPEN

  7. When asked for a key name enter NTHIVE and click OK

  8. Now move to NTHIVE\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider\<SID>

  9. Select Permissions from the Security menu

  10. Click Add

    Select Domain Admins (or whatever you want), access type READ and click Add. When finished click OK

  11. Select Unload Hive from the registry menu

  12. Close the registry editor
You will now be able to export this users profile.
